Blaine Gabbert completes 44-of-49 passes at Pro Day

Posted by Evan Silva on March 17, 2011, 2:50 PM EDT

Getty ImagesDave Matter of the Columbia Daily Tribune reports that the unofficial completion count from Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert’s Thursday Pro Day was 44-for-49.

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton’s total was 50-of-60, while TCU’s Andy Dalton went 49-for-52 earlier this week.

Unlike Newton’s, Gabbert’s Pro Day was not fully televised. So until NFL Network’s Mike Mayock speaks later today, we have to rely on beat writers like Matter for observations. Matter covers the Missouri Tiger football team for the Daily Tribune.

Matter attributed “at least three” of Gabbert’s misses to drops on catchable balls. Drops were not unexpected, as Gabbert was throwing to small-school receivers because former Missouri players were ineligible due to the NFL’s lockout.

ESPN did televise the first 18-20 throws of Gabbert’s routine. To the untrained eye, Gabbert’s ball appears to fly smoothly and powerfully off his hand. He spins a tight spiral, demonstrated impressive touch on downfield throws, and was able to power the ball to any spot on the field he wanted. We don’t question Gabbert’s arm strength.

At least seven high-ranking NFL types were confirmed to be on hand: Rex Ryan, John Harbaugh, Marvin Lewis, John Elway, Dirk Koetter, Jim Harbaugh, and Jack Del Rio.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera and G.M. Marty Hurney were not seen.

We’ll have another review of the Missouri Pro Day when Mayock speaks on NFL Network’s Path to the Draft at 6 p.m. eastern.

Maybe, I mean we checked out Cam Newton. Doesn't mean we are in love with him though.

So I guess it's not that interesting then.

I feel ya, I just hope the teams drafting ahead of us are stupid enough to take either/both of these imposters in the top 8.

But the difference IS that the 49ers really do need a QB. So their interest in checking out a 1st round QB is probably more sincere than ours.

If I'm the Panthers I'm taking Gabbert without hesitation. He's clearly the best QB in this draft and probably their biggest need on the team.

My only concern with him is if he's too much of a pretty boy to make it in the league... Possibly a David Carr.

They have the 1st pick in the draft. I don't think I'd use that selection on simply the best QB in the class. He better be the best player too. Or at least right there in the discussion.
