The Buffalo Bills have named former University of Pittsburgh head coach Dave Wannstedt as their new assistant head coach/inside linebackers coach.

The 58-year-old Wannstedt has spent the past six seasons as the head man at Pitt. He was forced to resign last month from that position.

"We are extremely pleased to have Dave Wannstedt join our staff," said Bills head coach Chan Gailey. "Dave and I have known each other for quite awhile. I respected him when I worked for him, and I'm excited that he is going to be able to join our staff. He'll have the title of assistant head coach and will be coaching the inside linebackers. I look forward to him being able to help our team in many ways. With his amount of experience he certainly should be able to do that. We look forward to having him."

Gailey and Wannstedt worked together for two years in Miami. Wannstedt, who was the coach of the Dolphins from 2000-04, hired Gailey as his offensive coordinator in 2000.

Pitt went 42-31 under Wannstedt, who was hired prior to the 2005 season.

Wannstedt's connection with the school dated to his playing days -- he was an offensive tackle from 1970-73 and a captain his senior year -- and he also began his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Panthers in 1975. He was part of the staff the following year when the Panthers won the national championship.

Stints at Oklahoma State and Southern California were followed by a successful run as defensive coordinator at Miami-Florida. The Hurricanes lost just two games and captured a national championship during his three years there.

Wannstedt moved on to the NFL in 1989 with Jimmy Johnson and became defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. After winning a Super Bowl title in 1992, he was named head coach of the Chicago Bears, where he coached from 1993-1998.

Wannstedt had a mark of 82-87 as an NFL head coach.
