By now, I know most of the Cowboys fans are fed up with the Cowboys trying to promote from within when it comes to safety. And I can’t really say that I blame them.
Since Darren Woodson’s career suddenly ended just before the 2004 season, it’s been a wild ride with players such as Tony Dixon, Lynn Scott, Keith Davis, Pat Watkins to Ken Hamlin and then Alan Ball. Other than Hamlin, all of those guys are considered home-grown players whom the Cowboys simply hoped would pan out.
Now it seems like they might be ready to open the wallet up and sign a safety or two. But let’s say that Nnamdi Asomugha does get signed here. It’s really hard for me to think the Cowboys will sign two safeties for big money, too.
One of them could be Gerald Sensabaugh, who could play either free safety or strong. It begs the question about players already on the squad and something keeps bringing me back to Barry Church.
For some reason, ever since he signed as a rookie free agent last year, I just thought he might have something to offer. Last year, he showed some signs in the preseason and the Cowboys thought enough of him to put him in goal-line situations as well.
I know this, when Sensabaugh hurt his shoulder in preseason, even before Church had ever taken a meaningful snap, he was the guy I would’ve promoted into the starting lineup on the strong side.
I think you might have some growing pains with him, like you would (and have) with any safety. But Church is someone that gets the job done when the lights come on. He’s not extremely fast or quick, but he’s big enough to make tackles and just seems savvy enough to be around the ball.
I’m not saying put the eggs in his basket right now, but when it comes to the in-house safeties that are available – Owusu-Ansah, Ball, Sendejo and McCray - I like Church’s chances to eventually start over the rest of that pack.
