Listened with interest to Bill Belichick's weekly appearance on sports radio WEEI yesterday, and there was one part of the interview that particularly piqued interest: If Belichick had rule-making authority, he'd do away with the point-after-attempt.

I had never heard Belichick say that about the P.A.T.

He explained his thinking while touching on his disappointment with the NFL's new kickoff rules.

"Philosophically, plays that are non-plays shouldn’t be in the game. I don't think it is good for the game. Extra points, when the odds are 99 percent range in extra points it is not a play. Lets move the ball back to the 15-20 yard line and not make it a tap in. Let them kick it. Same thing with the kickoff return, if you’re just going to put the ball on the 20, put the ball on the 20," Belichick told hosts Glenn Ordway, Michael Holley and Tedy Bruschi on "The Big Show."

Belichick is now in his 37th year coaching in the NFL, and with that, he brings an interesting perspective when it comes to what is good for the NFL's on-field product.

Perhaps his thoughts on altering the point-after-attempt generates some momentum among the NFL competition committee in the coming years.

Touchdowns should just be 7 points.

Point afters are gay.

And you can't do away with kick off altogether (putting the ball at the 20) because of the on side kick.

The onside kick will eventually be outlawed in the name of "player safety."

Instead, if the team kicking off wants to try to get the ball back, they will need a kicker with a +9 onside kick, and then roll the dice.... oh hell, I can't do nerd speak. Nevermind.

Its an interesting concept but this will never happen.

I tend to be a traditionalist when it comes to some things. Keep it the way it is and forget about it.

I heard the clip. I thought he said to move the PAT out some, not eliminate it. I like that idea.

Far as kickoffs, how about kicking off from the 35, as is, but lining up the coverage team on the ball?

Kick off idea. Two players on the field. Kicker to kick it off, kicker to return it. Kicker v Kicker. High Adventure and mayhem!

put the ball on the 50 and have the opposing teams line up at the 30's and run towards it like our gym teacher used to do with dodgeballs in the center of the gym, leading to some incredible collisions of 11 year olds.

They won't get rid of the kickoffs due to the onside.

They won't get rid of the XP because of the option to go for 2.

Strategy gentlemen. Without it we might as well bring back Wade or Barry Switzer.

Buehler would be coveted in this scenario.

We could go your fastest guy vs. our fastest guy. Put the ball at midfield and they each start at the opposite end zone. Whoever gets the ball starts on offense. Raiders would be back on top of the NFL.

You can still get rid of the XP.

If a team wants to go for two, just ask the coach after the touchdown is scored if he wants it to be worth 7 points, or 8.

Actually, that's an interesting concept. TD's would normally be worth 7 pts. If they want the option to go for two, take a point off making it 6, then line the ball up and give them the opportunity to go for 2.

The only thing you'd lose is if they wanted to try a surprise 2pt attemt from XP formation. ( But really, how often do you see that?) But I guess they could still do that, if they make it they get 1 more pt. If they don't, they lose a pt.

Thats how the XFL did their "coin toss".
