Austin Reaching ‘Playmaker’ Status

This time last year, Miles Austin two catches for 62 yards and a touchdown after two games. In fact, Austin ended up with two catches for 62 yards and a touchdown . . . after three games in 2009.
But obvioiusly, things just aren’t different this year, it’s completely a night and day change.
Now, Austin isn’t just the starter, but he’s really the only guy on this team that has put together two really good games in two weeks. With 10 catches in each of the first two games, Austin became just the second player in Cowboys history – along with Michael Irvin – to record double-digit catches in consecutive weeks.
Irvin did it back in 1995, catching 11 against Kansas City in a Thanksgiving Day win and then 10 more in a stunning upset loss to the Redskins. I only mention the year because 1995 was an unbelievable season for Irvin, who not only caught 111 passes for 1,603 yards (both still franchise records), but Irvin had an amazing run of 11 games of 100 yards or more, including eight straight.
Something tells me Austin might have a chance for those 11 100-yard games. I know that would be quite a feat, but it’s not out of the question with the way the Cowboys are using Austin and his ability to get deep. All it takes is one deep one and that’s about 60 yards right there.
As for a streak of 100-yard games, it’s currently only at two. Austin finished the 2009 regular season with 92 yards against Washington and 90 in the first of two games against the Eagles.
But maybe 2010 will be even better for Miles. And maybe it has a chance to rival even that season Irvin had in 1995.
I’m sure most Cowboys fans, and even Austin, would trade the overall team success of 1995, than any individual marks that might be set this year.
