Missouri State lineman taken in fourth round, 110th overall, by Dallas.

David Arkin was shopping for a cell phone case Saturday morning when he received a text message saying he had been drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.

"I was like, 'yeah, whatever.' I figured it was just somebody messing with me," Arkin said.

A few seconds later, Arkin's cell phone rang. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was on the other end.

"Wow," Arkin recalls thinking to himself. "This is really happening."

Indeed, the four-year Missouri State standout offensive lineman was selected by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the National Football League draft.

"It's America's Team, one of the biggest teams in the NFL," Arkin said. "I'm so excited to be going there."

"I couldn't ask for anything better."

Arkin, from Kapaun High School in Wichita, Kan., was a consensus Football Championship Subdivision All-American last season and a four-time all-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection.

The 6-foot-5, 302-pound Arkin was the 110th player and 18th offensive linemen selected in the draft, and the 13th player taken in the fourth round.

"It's been a wild ride," said Arkin, barely recruited out of high school. "I'm so happy that I came to Missouri State and spent my time here. It's worked out great for me."

Arkin started all 44 games during the last four seasons. He played guard his first three seasons before switching to tackle as a senior.

The Cowboys project him as a guard. ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay called Arkin "one of my sleeper offensive linemen" in the draft.

"He has all the qualities it takes to be a big-time star in this league," McShay said. "He has some nastiness and ... is still growing into his body."

"David Arkin will be a big-time guard in this league."

The Cowboys released audio of Jones' call to Arkin. Head coach Jason Garrett and offensive line coach Hudson Houck also talked to him.

"We've had a good chance to spend some time evaluating," Jones told Arkin. "You've worked hard and you're outstanding off the field as well."

Garrett told him not to worry about the NFL lockout and that "we'll be playing football soon enough. Get ready to roll."

Arkin is the second MSU player drafted in two years. Tight end Clay Harbor was a fourth-round selection by Philadelphia last year and made the Eagles' roster.

"Clay sent me a text and said 'you're my rival now,' " Arkin said, laughing.

Arkin also is the second-highest MSU draftee, with offensive lineman Tom Mullen going as the 28th overall pick in 1974 to the New York Giants.

A Green Bay Packers fan growing up, Arkin's allegiance clearly shifted as of Saturday.

"The Cowboys definitely are my No. 1 seed now," he said.
