Archer: If Cowboys made a coaching change, the replacement would be an internal hire

Dallas Morning News Cowboys writer Todd Archer chatted with fans about a number of Cowboys-related topics Monday afternoon. Here are some highlights:
On whether there's any chance the Cowboys will fire Wade Phillips this week:
Jerry Jones has never made an in-season move like that when things were much worse than they are now. I don't see it happening. Remember, there's a lockout coming, so he's not going to bring somebody you'd want from the outside (Cowher, Billick, Gruden, whomever) to coach the last two months of the season, pay them a ton and then have them not have a team to coach in 2011. If a move is made - and that's a big if - then it would be an internal move. So who would you name the interim guy? Garrett? Joe DeCamillis? Garrett is the assistant head coach but the offense has not covered itself in glory. Neither have the special teams.
On whether any team had success with an owner that doubles as a GM:
The Cowboys of the 90s would be one example. Paul Brown in Cleveland George Halas in Chicago. Al Davis back in the day. The structure isn't the problem. And if it was the proble, it wouldn't change anyway. I wonder if Jerry gives the head coach too much power and gives in to everything he wants.
On whether Jerry Jones is wondering about coaching candidates like Tony Sparano, Sean Payton and Todd Hayley:
I've said this before, but I'll say it again. I think Sparano would have been the best choice after Parcells left. Sparano would have maintained the Parcells' discipline but allowed Jerry to be Jerry, so to speak. Not that he has it all figured out in Miami, mind you, but I just think he would have been a good presence around this team.
