IRVING, Texas -- Until we know how the new collective bargaining agreement shakes out we are all living in some sort of fantasy world regarding free agency, the salary cap and how teams can restructure contracts or cut players to create more room.

Let’s just go with the assumption the rules will remain the same when talking about restructuring contracts.

If so, then the Cowboys can create nearly $17.5 million in salary cap room by re-working the deals of DeMarcus Ware, Tony Romo and Miles Austin.

Romo’s base salary in 2011 is $9 million. Austin will pull down $8.54 million. Ware will take home $6.7 million. The Cowboys can knock those base salaries down to the veteran minimum ($765,000 in the case of Romo and Ware; $640,000 for Austin) and turn the rest into signing bonus.

Romo’s cap figure would go from $12.962 million to $7.472 million. Ware’s cap figure would go from $11.348 million to $5.952 million. Austin’s cap figure would go from $8.54 million to $1.956 million.

The Cowboys were shrewd in their extension with Austin last year, by paying him $17 million in base salary, thanks to having no cap in 2010. There is no existing proration, so by lowering Austin’s base salary, they can turn $7.9 million into a bonus and prorate it through 2016.

The players would not oppose the move because it means more guaranteed money in their pockets now. The only downside is how it raises the future cap figures of Romo and Ware by $2.745 million and $1.187 million respectively in the future.

Regardless of how much the 2011 cap figure will be the Cowboys will almost certainly have to make these accounting moves either to create room to sign free agents – either theirs or new players - or to fit every contract under the cap.

Romo has three years left and a huge base salary the next two seasons. His contract cannot be reworked unless we give him a new deal in 2012. If we do the rework without a new deal in 2012 his cap number next season will be close to $20 million.

They need to rework newmans too. Or flat out release him. Same with Leonard davis. Theres a sense of entitlement in Dallas. Giving newman and davis a choice restructure or release would send a msg to the team.

Reworking Newman and Davis' contracts would send a message to the team?

We need a miracle worker to fix this cap mess.

Thanks, Jerruh and Stephen.

I was not aware we were in a cap mess. Certainly not one that would require a miracle.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last time I checked we were last in the league with a 136.6 million cap figure.

What are we to do, keep back loading these contracts? Sooner or later it catches up to ya. And not to mention we went 6-10 last year.

Yeah, were in great shape. That doesn't include any free agents signings or any of the players we just drafted salaries. I just don't know how it's going to work until the CBA is settled.

I don't know exactly what our cap figure is because I haven't looked into it much. I haven't heard much about it either, other than it being mentioned we have the highest cap figure in the league. While that is not a good thing, that doesn't mean we're in a horrible position that requires a miracle to fix.

Heck, once the CBA is announced and the cap is set, we might not need to release or restructure anyone to get under the cap. Our moves in free agency might be limited, but I'd rather not sign a bunch of free agents anyway. Especially not big money guys.

And we were 6-10 because of shoddy coaching and injuries. You saw how the team responded once we got new leadership.

We have three starting offensive linemen that need to be signed/re-signed under this crappy cap. We also need to fill out our depth at safety and defensive end through free agency. For having the highest cap figure in the league, we have a good handful of players we need to get under contract.

No wonder Romo says:"If losing a football game is the worst thing that can happen to me then I've had a great life"..... Yes Tony you have..lol

That comment was made because his father was undergoing chemo at the time for prostate cancer, so from his point of view in that moment living to fight another day was not the worst thing to ever happen.

I always love the distortion of this comment. The media pressed him repeatedly with stupid questions to which their are no answers and finally he made that statement, an honest one and he got killed for it.

I miss the honest fun loving romo but our local and national media tore him down and ruined him and made him a robot.

Right.

Which is why we clearly are in the worst cap position. Regardless of what the cap number turns out to be.

Outstanding work by the son of a bum.
