IRVING, Texas -- The funny thing when you’re on the roster bubble is you never really get a call to say you actually made the team. That was Dan Bailey’s world on Saturday.

“I got a call from Chris Boniol later in the day kind of saying congratulations,” Bailey said. “For a while there I wasn’t sure if I was good to go or not.”

Bailey is the third different field goal kicker the Cowboys will employ over the last three years. He made both of his tries in the preseason – 37 and 41 yards – but benefitted greatly from the inability of Dave Rayner and David Buehler to make their kicks in the preseason finale at Miami.

The Cowboys kept Buehler to be a kickoff specialist, and Bailey understands his job security could be temporary.

“That’s the nature of the league: There’s always somebody wanting your job,” Bailey said. “There’s competition every day, so it’s definitely not time for me to slack off or relax. I’m going to keep working and keep making my kicks.”
