Cowboys pass defense helped by '11 schedule
April, 21, 2011
By Todd Archer

IRVING, Texas -- The Cowboys are banking a lot of their defensive improvement in 2011 on new coordinator Rob Ryan.

The schedule should help, too.

In 2010, the Cowboys allowed 33 touchdown passes and had the 26th ranked pass defense. Opposing quarterbacks had a 92.7 passer rating. The Cowboys went up against some of the best quarterbacks: four finished in the top 10 in passer rating and five of the top seven in terms of passing yards. This is not to make an excuse for what happened in 2010 because the defense allowed Jacksonville’s David Garrard to have a Hall of Fame day with four touchdown passes.

In 2011 – provided there is a full 2011 season – the Cowboys will go against three of the top 10 quarterbacks in terms of passer rating (Tom Brady, Michael Vick, Josh Freeman) and only one in the top seven in yards (Brady).

They could end up with seven games against teams breaking in new quarterbacks, too. Buffalo, Seattle, Miami, Washington (twice), Arizona and San Francisco are in the quarterback market either in the draft or free agency.

With St. Louis’ Sam Bradford, Detroit’s Matthew Stafford (if healthy), Mark Sanchez of the New York Jets, the Cowboys will see three of the better young quarterbacks, but that is better than a crew included Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Matt Schaub and Michael Vick in 2010.

Yeah, whatever look what Arizona's John Skelton did to our defense last year.

I just hope Rob can get this defense back to dominance.

I think he'll get improvement from alot of guys. Having a full training camp and preseason though is gonna be critical because I'm sure his scheme is alot different from what Wade has been doing. There will be alot of stuff to learn.

I'm not taking anything for granted with this band of bozos.

We couldn't stop Skelton when we had to and we allowed guys like Garrard and Vince Young to look like All-Pros.

Coaching will help, but you can't fix stupid. So let's wait and see what our team looks like come August before we start counting unhatched chickens.

I really think 2 improved safeties will make all the difference in the world. Wade's carefree happy Grampa attitude being removed will help as well.

The biggest improvement would come from a real training camp and just the attacking attitude of Rob Ryan. You have to have that kind of mindset to play defense in this league.

And with that attacking style, we will give up plenty of big plays next year.

It wasn't. The middle of our pass defense was swiss cheese and our pass-rush was inconsistent at best.

I think it has a lot to do with it, even though I still think we need safeties and a little more help on the DL.

I think Rob's scheme helps out those players with lesser skills, look at Cleveland's defense we have a lot more talent on our defense than they do.

True that, but players still need to execute.

That's assuming we have two improved safeties.
