Archer: Cowboys' DE talks expand to Smith, Coleman

Cowboys' DE talks expand to Smith, Coleman
July, 27, 2011

By Todd Archer

SAN ANTONIO -- Add two more defensive ends to the Cowboys’ search party: Robaire Smith and Kenyon Coleman.

The Cowboys have had contact with both players, who played for new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in Cleveland. The Cowboys have also negotiations with the agent for two of their own free agents, Stephen Bowen and Marcus Spears. The Cowboys have also expressed a level of interest in Green Bay’s Cullen Jenkins.

Coleman played for the Cowboys from 2003-06 after being acquired in a trade from Oakland. He signed with the New York Jets before joining Cleveland. He started 14 games last year and was credited with 68 tackles with 2.5 sacks and three fumble recoveries.

Smith, 33, was limited to five games last year because of an injury and had 25 tackles. In 2009 he had 62 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The more I read these articles, the more I believe we're going after system players, especially, on defense.

I know some of you don't want to hear that, but be prepared to see us sign guys like Elam, Huff, Coleman, ect;

I don't know. I think they might be kicking tires. I really don't have a problem with it. Give Rob Ryan what he wants and needs to run his defense. It's that simple. I've kind of cooled on Huff. I would like Elam and go with AOA. Coleman may not be too bad. Him, along with possibly Bowens, and Ratliff, would make a decent line. Now if we ended up with Jonathan Joseph, that would be a nice free agency.

it makes sense. To me having a guy that knows ryans defense at each level makes sense. All of them elam, coleman and maybe someone like roth will not command hardly any money and would not be long timers. Just to get us through.

Inexpensive mid level guys who have a unique quality to us because of their background with ryan makes all the sense in the world.

I dont think any of these guys would keep us from a big name free agent either.

He knows the system and racked up more sacks than both starting DEs combined last yeat (Coleman). Hard not to like. Not sure on Smith though.

Re-signing Spears and Bowen would be very smart. Both are younger and still have more upside than some of these other guys.

I'm all for re-signing Bowens and even Spears. I don't think Spears will be a starter though. I can of see the Dline being Bowens, Ratliff, and Coleman. I hope they cut Olshansky.

Spears is alot more talented than Coleman IMO

I agree on Olshansky, I hope he's traded or cut

I guess I'm just being impatient lol

We haven't heard anything on Spears yet, I wonder if any other clubs have contacted him. Anyone here anything on him the past 24 hours?
