ARLINGTON -- It wasn't Babe Ruth pointing to the outfield fence with his baseball bat and following it up with a homerun, but in his own way, Cowboys outside linebacker Anthony Spencer called his shot Monday night against the Washington Redskins.
Before the Cowboys defense took the field with 1:40 to play in the fourth quarter, clinging to an 18-16 lead, Spencer told fellow outside backer DeMarcus Ware that he was going to cause a fumble.
And that's exactly what he did five plays later, chasing down Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman and knocking the ball loose with 28 seconds to play.
The only part of his prediction that fell short was that he said Ware would be the one recovering the loose ball. In reality, Sean Lee, who was making plays all night, was the guy in the right place at the right time.
"I said, 'Well cool, vice versa. If I cause a fumble, I want you to pick it up,'" Ware recalled of the exchange he had with Spencer. "He made the fumble, but I didn't pick it up.
"But we won the game. When it counted, guys stepped up and got turnovers."
Grossman was taking off on second-and-10, trying to pick up a few yards near midfield, however, he made a mistake and looked back.
"I was right on his heels," Spencer said. "When he turned back and looked at me I saw the ball, so I knew it was on the inside hand. I just swiped and knocked it out.
"I was definitely going for the ball late like that in the game. A fumble ends the game."
Spencer, who was credited with a sack on the play, also recorded four tackles on the night.
