Anthony Spencer called his shot, told teammate he was going to force fumble on final series

ARLINGTON -- It wasn't Babe Ruth pointing to the outfield fence with his baseball bat and following it up with a homerun, but in his own way, Cowboys outside linebacker Anthony Spencer called his shot Monday night against the Washington Redskins.

Before the Cowboys defense took the field with 1:40 to play in the fourth quarter, clinging to an 18-16 lead, Spencer told fellow outside backer DeMarcus Ware that he was going to cause a fumble.

And that's exactly what he did five plays later, chasing down Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman and knocking the ball loose with 28 seconds to play.

The only part of his prediction that fell short was that he said Ware would be the one recovering the loose ball. In reality, Sean Lee, who was making plays all night, was the guy in the right place at the right time.

"I said, 'Well cool, vice versa. If I cause a fumble, I want you to pick it up,'" Ware recalled of the exchange he had with Spencer. "He made the fumble, but I didn't pick it up.

"But we won the game. When it counted, guys stepped up and got turnovers."

Grossman was taking off on second-and-10, trying to pick up a few yards near midfield, however, he made a mistake and looked back.

"I was right on his heels," Spencer said. "When he turned back and looked at me I saw the ball, so I knew it was on the inside hand. I just swiped and knocked it out.

"I was definitely going for the ball late like that in the game. A fumble ends the game."

Spencer, who was credited with a sack on the play, also recorded four tackles on the night.

Meh...

I bet players say shit like this all the time to one another, and don't come through.

But whatever. Glad he did this time.

It reminded me of Ware's caused fumble on McNabb against the Eagles, in the playoffs of 2009.

Clutch. He almost did the same thing earlier but grossman got out of bounds.

Did you notice Grossman looking for Spencer over both shoulders as he tried to get out of bounds? I could almost hear him screaming like a startled little girl.

3. Now its time for him to disappear for awhile. Spencer is a cock tease. Its like going out with a slut and only getting a handy at the end of the night.

I think this is the year he becomes more dominant. He's got a sack in each game along with a handful of pressures already and 2 forced fumbles already as well.

Well, yeah... it's a contract year, isn't it?

That it is. And he's got Ryan running the D. Two things that are certainly working in his favor. I bet he ends up with 10+ sacks this year.

Don't be shocked if the Cowboys start up talks with extending him, thinking they can save money now instead of waiting for him to complete a big year.

I'd almost be against that, I think.

I think we can find another OLB either in the draft, or even give Butler the role going into camp next year.

You can't re-sign everyone. We scout nowhere near as well as the Steelers, but for years they'd let good/seemingly great OLB's go in free agency, only to replace them with the next guy up.

Of course, back then, there were fewer teams running a true 3-4, so it was easier to snag that uber-talented yet undersized college DE and convert him to 3-4 OLB than it is now.

If we signed him to an extension during the season to a moderate, reasonable contract you'd be against that?

Butler isn't even close to the LB that Spencer is man.

Before the season I agreed with this take but now, looking at the holes we have, I say we extend Spencer now before he hits Free Agency.

Next off-season we need to sign or draft a guard, a center, a 3rd WR, ILB depth (James and Brooking are free agents), a cornerback (Newman is a likely cap casualty), and 2 safeties (Elam and Sensabaugh are free agents). We may also need a QB if 1) Kitna (a free agent) retires and 2) we aren't convinced McGee is ready to be the #2 guy. Personally, I also think we (still) need a big run-stuffing NT.

So adding another pass-rusher would be adding to an already long list of off-season needs.
