This really shouldn't come as any surprise - since the same thing was basically printed in a poll of ESPN's NFL writers before the draft - but there seems to be a resounding national consensus that the Cowboys cornerback position is totally barren.

The latest person to echo that sentiment is Pat Kirwan, the NFL.com analyst and former front office man who has been ranking the league's best players at each position. In his latest rankings he discusses cornerbacks, and doesn't mention any Cowboys players among the 30 best in the league.

Guys like Captain Munnerlyn of the Panthers and even rookies Patrick Peterson and Jimmy Smith were picked as players to watch over the likes of Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins, who just a year ago were each coming off Pro Bowl appearances.

Things change quickly in the NFL, of course. The Cowboys could certainly upgrade their cornerback position by dropping Newman and adding free agent Nnamdi Asomugha, who Kirwan and everyone else count in the top tier of cover men.

However, that move might preclude the Cowboys from adding help to their offensive and defensive lines as well as the safety position.

Would fixing one of 11 positions on defense be worth the sacrifice?

You look at the names the Cowboys have at corner and yeah, I see folks optimism in that the position doesn't need any additional help.

But then I look at the numbers. It wasn't the pass rush that totally fell apart last season. It was a middling 16th.

It was the pass defense. And yeah as atrocious as Ball was, the fact is that the corners were terrible. Simply terrible.

The optimist in me says that the two starting corners bounce back and put together a decent campaign.

The pessimist says that 2010 wasn't a mirage, but it was the level of play that we will continue to get from Newman and Jenkins.

The truth is probably somewhere in between.
