Report: Giants SS Phillips has sprained MCL

12/4/2011 7:32:22 PM | More

Mike Mazzeo of ESPNNewYork.com reports Giants safety Kenny Phillips left Sunday's 38-35 loss to the Green Bay Packers due to a knee sprain.

Phillips has been initially diagnosed by team doctors with an MCL sprain, and he'll undergo an MRI, a team source told ESPN's NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Phillips suffered the injury when he collided with linebacker Chase Blackburn while trying to tackle Packers tight end Jermichael Finley after Finley made a 23-yard reception with 5:40 remaining in the second quarter. The collision sent Phillips violently to the ground.

Giants Offensive Line takes another hit: Stacey Peters hospitalized

The Giants’ beleaguered offensive line just may have lost another key piece.

Backup offensive lineman Stacy Andrews, who has served as the team’s jumbo TE in recent weeks, was inactive after being hospitalized on Saturday night with what the team said are “pulmonary embolisms” in his lungs, a serious situation that could end his season.

The 30-year-old Andrews was sent to Hackensack University Medical Center with blood clots that the Giants say are believed to have originated in his legs. They apparently broke up and travelled to his lungs from there.

In a statement released by the Giants, trainer Ronnie Barnes said the backup tackle is receiving treatment and will likely be released from the hospital on Monday.

Andrews has played in nine games for the Giants, missing two because of a back injury. His brother, Shawn, was a reserve offensive lineman on the Giants last year, and had to be suddenly hospitalized on Thanksgiving Day, 2010, due to back problems.

Bradshaw able to put best foot forward, revitalizes Giant running game in return from injury

Before it all began, Ahmad Bradshaw was just a bit nervous. The Giants’ tailback was determined to play on Sunday against the undefeated Green Bay Packers, but even he wasn’t sure if his broken foot would be able to handle the strain.

Yet there Bradshaw was after the Giants’ 38-35 loss, getting dressed at his locker and moving without a limp.

“I feel great, better than I thought I would be,” he said. “I think everyone thought I would be sore, not even able to walk. But I feel great.”

And for at least one afternoon, the Giants’ ground game felt the same way. Bradshaw combined with Brandon Jacobs to bust Big Blue out of its rushing slump. The two backs keyed a Giants attack that rumbled for 100 yards for the first time since Week 10 and averaged a season-high 5.0 yards per carry.

“We knew that’s what we had to do,” Jacobs said. “We did what we had to do. I thought we ran hard as backs.”

And the two backs happily shared the load. More than a month after complaining about not getting enough carries, Jacobs made the most of his eight touches, rushing for 59 yards and one TD, and he seemed to feed off the return of his tag-team partner.

The effort took pressure off Eli Manning, who passed for 347 yards and threw three TDs for the first time since Oct. 9 as Big Blue finally made someone pay for ignoring the run.

“They had a plan that they were going to keep two safeties high and challenge us to run, and we did that,” Manning said. “We ran the ball well.”

Bradshaw got things started, touching the ball on the Giants’ first two plays and accounting for 12 yards to set up Travis Beckum’s 67-yard catch-and-run TD. And that was enough to reinvigorate his struggling Big Blue rushing co-star.

“It was definitely good to get Bulldog back out with us,” Jacobs said. “I think he played a wonderful game.”

After watching Bradshaw fight through the first quarter, the much-maligned big back took his first handoff for 11 yards. He rumbled for another 14 yards on the next play, nearly breaking into the open field.

“That’s what his plan is every day to come in and do,” Bradshaw said of Jacobs’ solid game. “We played for each other. We complemented each other today.”

Bradshaw admitted his injury may keep him from practicing.

But he believes the Giants are on the verge of getting the run game in gear.

“We know what we gotta do,” Bradshaw said. “And I think we'll be fine.”

We will be forced into man to man next week to stop the run.

that means we will have to have an all world pass rush or jenkins and newman are going to have to play their best games.

Either way, this team needs to take care of business.

Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz will eat Jenkins and Newmans babies.

Got a bad feeling about the outcome of this game.

Ultimately I wont be surprised at any result. If we actually played a solid 60 mins of football, we could win fairly comfortably. But we never do that.

Ugly games last few weeks and now we're facing a quality offensive team. I think we may get rolled.

This is the best team we've played since that Eagles situation in Philly when they laid it all out on us. I feel as if this will be a similar scenario because they're fighting for their season. Couglin is a master at prepping his team for games like this. Blah.

Line is down to Cowboys -3.

I pay attention to this stuff, because it's usually a good indicator of what's to come.

If it seems suspicious, it probably is. The Cowboys opening up -3.5 seems high to me. Makes me believe we might win by a TD or more.

Will be interesting to see how the line ends up.

Mind you, I understand that line movements are based on public bets. But the line is set by guys who make a living out of this stuff. And the line doesn't always move based on public bets. Earlier this year, Baltimore was favored by a small margin over Tennesee. 80% of the money coming in was for Baltimore, but the line never moved. The odds makers (Vegas) knew something was up. End result, Tennessee wins straight up, and Vegas gets paid.

I'm not saying conspiracy or anything. I'm just saying linesmakers know what their doing.

Suffice to say, I'll be interested to see how the line moves all week long.

S Kenny Phillips likely out 1-2 weeks

BY Ebenezer Samuel

Don't expect to see safety Kenny Phillips on the field in Sunday's pivotal NFC East clash with the Dallas Cowboys.

Phillips was seen sporting a bulky brace on his left knee today. He insisted once again that the injury is not serious, but a league source said that Phillips has a sprained MCL and will miss at least 1-2 weeks.

Coach Tom Coughlin was even more nervous. He said Phillips was undergoing tests today, and admitted that he was concerned.

"I don't know what to be clear about, to be honest with," he said. "I've seen guys jump off and run off the field, and the next day it's an ACL (injury)."

Phillips injured the knee in the second quarter of Sunday's 35-34 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and it is the same knee that he underwent microfracture surgery on during the 2009 season. He returned from that surgery last season and did not regain his full quickness until this year.

Safety Antrel Rolle called Phillips' possible absence "definitely a huge loss," but added that the team has already dealt with plenty of secondary issues.

"We've found a way to get through it so far," Rolle said, "and we're going to keep finding a way."

More foot issues for Prince
Rookie corner Prince Amukamara was replaced by Will Blackmon late in the game, and Blackmon was the player who was burned by Jordy Nelson on a pivotal catch on Green Bay's game-winning drive.

On Sunday, Coughlin said Amukamara was not in the game because of fatigue. But Amukamara added that there was another reason that he wasn't playing: He had rolled his ankle in his left foot. Additionally, his right foot - the one he broke in training camp - was sore.

"But I should be practicing on Wednesday," Amukamara said.

That could be crucial for the Giants, especially if Phillips does indeed miss Sunday's game. With Phillips in the defensive backfield, rookie Tyler Sash will play more at safety, and Rolle may be forced out of his nickel corner spot. That may lead to Prince seeing more action, and he said he will be ready.

"I think it's more a mentality thing," he said, "than a physical issue."

Andrews done
Backup OL Stacy Andrews' season is over, Coughlin said. The 30-year-old Andrews, who was hospitalized for pulmonary embolisms on Sunday, will likely be able to make a full recovery, Coughlin said, but he will not play again this season.

The Giants will add a player sometime this week to take Andrews' spot on the active roster.

And more injuries!
And here are the rest of the injuries you're wondering about.

- A source says DE Osi Umenyiora has no chance of practicing this week, which is in line with what we reported about him after he hurt his ankle in the Saints game.

- DE Dave Tollefson has a "contusion with swelling" around his right knee, Coughlin said. There is no word on whether he will be able to play Sunday.

"He's a tough guy, and if there's any way, he'll go," Coughlin said.

- LB Mark Herzlich had his right ankle in a walking boot. He said he "hopes to" practice this week, but there's no word yet.

- C David Baas is being evaluated for the headaches today. The headaches led to him being held out of the loss to the Packers. Coughlin said the team has "an idea" of what might be bothering Baas but is not sure yet.

- RB Ahmad Bradshaw and LB Michael Boley, who are nursing foot and hamstring injuries, respectively, are both "sore," Coughlin said.

- And one surprise that isn't a concern: WR Hakeem Nicks had his right ankle wrapped in the locker room today. He said he "tweaked" the ankle in the third quarter but that it is "not serious." He doesn't expect to even show up on the injury report.

Phillips being out is huge. He's a good player.

Bodes well for us in a potential shoot-out.

except for the fact we have Forest Gump at Head Coach. Giants will be hyped for this game. I can only hope Garrett will have enough time, when he isn't making excuses for himself, to get the team ready this week.

Has Garrett actually gotten this team ready for any single week yet? Just think about that. We looked awful coming off our bye and we just looked like shit coming off a 10 day break. The mirage that is "stacking one good day on top of another" is just that. He hasn't technically done a goddamn thing to help this team.

This is he best team we have played since the pats. The eagles speed is just a bad matchup for us.

I will say this and I know no one will agree with me but, manning is the best qb we play this year not named Brady. He is going to put points on the board.

I think there are a lot of similarities between the dolphins and the giants. I think we will see a similar game....only Eli can make every play.

Need turnovers, a big pay from DEz in the kicking game and romo to be sharp like he has been at home all year.
