S Kenny Phillips likely out 1-2 weeks
BY Ebenezer Samuel
Don't expect to see safety Kenny Phillips on the field in Sunday's pivotal NFC East clash with the Dallas Cowboys.
Phillips was seen sporting a bulky brace on his left knee today. He insisted once again that the injury is not serious, but a league source said that Phillips has a sprained MCL and will miss at least 1-2 weeks.
Coach Tom Coughlin was even more nervous. He said Phillips was undergoing tests today, and admitted that he was concerned.
"I don't know what to be clear about, to be honest with," he said. "I've seen guys jump off and run off the field, and the next day it's an ACL (injury)."
Phillips injured the knee in the second quarter of Sunday's 35-34 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and it is the same knee that he underwent microfracture surgery on during the 2009 season. He returned from that surgery last season and did not regain his full quickness until this year.
Safety Antrel Rolle called Phillips' possible absence "definitely a huge loss," but added that the team has already dealt with plenty of secondary issues.
"We've found a way to get through it so far," Rolle said, "and we're going to keep finding a way."
More foot issues for Prince
Rookie corner Prince Amukamara was replaced by Will Blackmon late in the game, and Blackmon was the player who was burned by Jordy Nelson on a pivotal catch on Green Bay's game-winning drive.
On Sunday, Coughlin said Amukamara was not in the game because of fatigue. But Amukamara added that there was another reason that he wasn't playing: He had rolled his ankle in his left foot. Additionally, his right foot - the one he broke in training camp - was sore.
"But I should be practicing on Wednesday," Amukamara said.
That could be crucial for the Giants, especially if Phillips does indeed miss Sunday's game. With Phillips in the defensive backfield, rookie Tyler Sash will play more at safety, and Rolle may be forced out of his nickel corner spot. That may lead to Prince seeing more action, and he said he will be ready.
"I think it's more a mentality thing," he said, "than a physical issue."
Andrews done
Backup OL Stacy Andrews' season is over, Coughlin said. The 30-year-old Andrews, who was hospitalized for pulmonary embolisms on Sunday, will likely be able to make a full recovery, Coughlin said, but he will not play again this season.
The Giants will add a player sometime this week to take Andrews' spot on the active roster.
And more injuries!
And here are the rest of the injuries you're wondering about.
- A source says DE Osi Umenyiora has no chance of practicing this week, which is in line with what we reported about him after he hurt his ankle in the Saints game.
- DE Dave Tollefson has a "contusion with swelling" around his right knee, Coughlin said. There is no word on whether he will be able to play Sunday.
"He's a tough guy, and if there's any way, he'll go," Coughlin said.
- LB Mark Herzlich had his right ankle in a walking boot. He said he "hopes to" practice this week, but there's no word yet.
- C David Baas is being evaluated for the headaches today. The headaches led to him being held out of the loss to the Packers. Coughlin said the team has "an idea" of what might be bothering Baas but is not sure yet.
- RB Ahmad Bradshaw and LB Michael Boley, who are nursing foot and hamstring injuries, respectively, are both "sore," Coughlin said.
- And one surprise that isn't a concern: WR Hakeem Nicks had his right ankle wrapped in the locker room today. He said he "tweaked" the ankle in the third quarter but that it is "not serious." He doesn't expect to even show up on the injury report.
