When Andrew Luck announced his decision to stay at Stanford back in January, Auburn's Nick Fairley immediately jumped to No. 1 overall on a lot of mock drafts.

Two months later, as Fairley's Pro Day arrives, the post-Combine indications are that his stock has fallen some. Several factors for this: his reputation as a dirty player at times in college; his sub-300 weight; the fact his Lombardi Award-winning season was his lone audition at the Division One level, and maybe he's a one-year wonder.

Perhaps those should be concerns, but it shouldn't drop Fairley too far. Just go back and watch the national championship against Oregon as a reminder that he should make an impact at the next level.

This is one of the reasons the Combine, to a certain degree, beats me down. It's oversaturation. Too much emphasis placed on drills and measurements and other superfluous data. It's useful and relevant, but it's not everything. I don't really care how fast Fairley ran the 10-yard split.

Can he play football, does he want to get better and will he represent his organization the right way? That's the biggest criteria for any prospect.

Don't know the guy personally, but he can sure play. And if he drops past five -- all the way to No. 9? -- some team will likely get a steal.
