At one point in the preseason, there was a question rolling through training camp whether or not the Cowboys would keep any real nose tackle behind Jay Ratliff.
With so many capable defensive ends, including Marcus Spears who has the size to play inside, the thought was if something happened to Ratliff, one of the ends could slide inside.
Now, with two preseason games to go, you get the feeling the Cowboys might not just keep one backup nose, but possibly two.
Junior Siavii has played well in these last two games, showing some strength to not only push the pile in the second half but make a big tackle for loss.
Josh Brent has also showed some flashes as well, and he’s doing so with a broken hand. It’s hard to push the pile without full strength in both hands. Yet, Brent made a nice play in the fourth-quarter on a key fourth-down stand.
Now, if the Cowboys get any more big injuries, meaning they need to go long at other positions, than the luxury of having two nose tackles probably won’t occur. But as it stands now, there is a chance the Cowboys could keep a pair of backups at the position.
