The San Francisco 49ers have named in-house executive Trent Baalke the team's general manager, multiple sources confirmed to ESPN.com's John Clayton late Tuesday night.
Baalke, previously the team's vice president of player personnel, interviewed with team president Jed York on Saturday.
Baalke said the two met for about two hours at Niners team headquarters in Santa Clara. Baalke, with six years in the franchise, was largely considered the front-runner for the job -- and he sure sounds confident about his chances. Baalke had an informal conversation with reporters on the field at Candlestick Park before the team's season finale Sunday against Arizona.
The 49ers have been without a GM since Scot McCloughan's abrupt departure last March in what York called a "mutual parting." The team narrowed its search Tuesday to Baalke and former Raiders general manager Michael Lombardi, the sources said.
Baalke's first task is to hire a head coach. The 49ers fired Mike Singletary late on Dec. 26 after San Francisco's 25-17 loss at St. Louis that eliminated the team from playoff contention.
A league source told Schefter on Monday that the 49ers are still targeting Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh. A decision on whether Harbaugh will remain with the Cardinal is expected this week.
The 49ers also have asked for and received permission to interview New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell and Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson.
San Francisco, coached by interim Jim Tomsula on Sunday after he was promoted from defensive line coach, has missed the playoffs for an eighth straight season.
York said previously the new general manager will have sole choice on who he hires as the new coach.
Baalke orchestrated the contract extensions of two key 49ers this season: four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis and star tight end Vernon Davis. Those are two significant moves since Baalke took over football operations after McCloughan left.
In May, Willis received a $50 million, five-year contract extension that takes him through the 2016 season and includes $29 million in guaranteed money. He earns $10 million per season. Davis was rewarded with a five-year deal paying him $37 million overall, with $34 million guaranteed.
Baalke also drafted rookie starting offensive linemen Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati with the 11th and 17th overall picks, respectively.
