'Boys Open At Jets, One Of Six National TV Games

Rob Phillips
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas - Put "Rob vs. Rex" in Broadway lights.

The Cowboys' 2011 regular season (barring a labor stoppage) will open Sept. 11 on NBC Sunday Night Football in New York, pitting new head coach Jason Garrett and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan against Rob's twin brother, Rex, and the Jets - one of six nationally-televised games for Dallas.

Although the current NFL lockout could threaten the start of the 2011 season, the league on Tuesday released the full schedules for all 32 teams. The Cowboys, third-place finishers in the NFC East at 6-10 a year ago, are tied for the 15th-toughest schedule -- calculated and ranked based on their opponents' combined 2010 winning percentage (.504).

The Cowboys will play only seven games against teams with 2010 winning records: the Patriots (14-2), Jets (11-5), Eagles twice (10-6), Giants twice (10-6) and Buccaneers (10-6).

In addition to six division games against each other, the NFC East (Cowboys, Eagles, Giants and Redskins) will play the eight teams from the AFC East (Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Patriots) and NFC West (49ers, Cardinals, Rams, Seahawks). The Cowboys' remaining two opponents are fellow third-place teams from the NFC South (Buccaneers) and NFC North (Lions).

The prime-time opener in New York marks the seventh time in the last eight seasons that the Cowboys have started on the road. They open the season with back-to-back road games for the first time since 1997, and only the 11th time in club history.

The Cowboys' Sept. 26 home opener against the Redskins - their lone Monday Night Football appearance - marks the latest date for a home opener in a 16-game season in club history.

Their four other national TV games include two more Sunday Night Football tilts (Oct. 30 at the Eagles and Dec. 11 at the Giants), the annual Thanksgiving Day game against the Dolphins at Cowboys Stadium and an NFL Network game at the Bucs on Dec. 17.

Here's a game-by-game look at the Cowboys' 2011 regular-season schedule:

at NY Jets (Sept. 11) The 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York will surely provide an emotional backdrop. The Cowboys must counteract the Jets' defense, which has finished first (2009) and third (2010) in Rex Ryan's first two seasons. 2010 Record: 11-5

at San Francisco (Sept. 18) The '90s rivalry has yet to be renewed - only five clashes since 2000, and none in the playoffs. 2010 Record: 6-10

vs. Washington (Sept. 26) The Redskins' quarterback probably won't be Rex Grossman on their next trip to Dallas. Then again, it won't be Donovan McNabb either. 2010 Record: 6-10

vs. Detroit (Oct. 2) The teams' ninth meeting in the last 11 seasons; the Cowboys are 5-3 in that stretch. The Lions are improving but need a healthy Matthew Stafford. 2010 Record: 6-10

Bye (Oct. 9)

at New England (Oct. 16) Only the 11th all-time meeting and the third against Tom Brady. The Pats are 66-12 at home since 2001. 2010 Record: 14-2

vs. St. Louis (Oct. 23) This is the fourth game against the resurgent Rams in the last six seasons, but only the fifth meeting since 1992. The most recent, of course, was an embarrassing road loss in 2008 to, as Pacman put it, "the Rams, dude." 2010 Result: 7-9

at Philadelphia (Oct. 30) For the first time since 2008, the Cowboys' regular season won't end against the Eagles. 2010 Record: 10-6

vs. Seattle (Nov. 6) The Seahawks won one more game than the Cowboys last season, but somehow got to the NFC Divisional Round via a pitiful NFC West and a Wild Card upset of the Super Bowl champion Saints. 2010 Record: 7-9

vs. Buffalo (Nov. 13) Chan Gailey's group could get a boost from this year's No. 3 overall pick, but there's a long way to go. Only the Lions and Bills haven't made the playoffs since 2000. 2010 Record: 4-12

at Washington (Nov. 20) Blame last year's loss at FedEx Field on Alex Barron's holding penalty, but the Cowboys made too many mistakes before the final play - a precursor to the entire season. 2010 Record: 6-10

vs. Miami (Nov. 24) The Dolphins still have deep Cowboys ties, starting with head coach Tony Sparano and general manager Jeff Ireland, but Big Bill no longer leads the brain trust. 2010 Record: 7-9

at Arizona (Dec. 4) Almost feels like Arizona is still an NFC East foe. This will be the seventh meeting since the Cards flew to the NFC West in 2002. The Cowboys have dropped two straight in Glendale. 2010 Record: 5-11

vs. NY Giants (Dec. 11) Things were bad before the Giants' Oct. 25 visit to Cowboys Stadium, but Tony Romo's fractured collarbone plunged a disappointing season to new depths. 2010 Record: 10-6

at Tampa Bay (Dec. 17) New head coach Raheem Morris has the Bucs on the rise. 2010 Record: 10-6

vs. Philadelphia (Dec. 24) The Cowboys beat up Michael Vick last time, but they still couldn't stop him. 2010 Record: 10-6

at NY Giants (Jan. 1, 2012) Jason Garrett's head coaching debut in the Meadowlands last November was a success. 2010 Record: 10-6

I think the last time Miami was on Thanksgiving day they beat the snot out of us with half-stache coaching them.

Then the time before that was the Leon Lett doh! game.

Bad mojo at work here.

A deeper look at the Cowboys schedule

By Calvin Watkins

OK, based on the season not being delayed due to the labor agreement we've basically all seen the Cowboys schedule.

Let's take a closer look:

Road games: The Cowboys open the season with consecutive road games at the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers. The last time Dallas opened its first two games on the road was 1997 and it split those games. Dallas won the season opener at Pittsburgh and lost the following week in overtime at Arizona. By the way, that was coach Barry Switzer's last season and the Cowboys finished the year 6-10. ... There is nothing good that comes with playing in New England. However the chances of bad weather are minimize with the game on Oct. 16 and the Cowboys coming off a bye. The Cowboys are 4-1 coming off byes the last five seasons. ... Two of the last three games are on the road and don't seem to be easy games. Dallas is at Tampa Bay on Dec. 17, a prime time game on NFL Network and it finishes the season on New Year's Day at the New York Giants.

Home games: Cowboys open the home schedule against Washington on Sept. 26 on ESPN. The first two home games could set the tone for the Cowboys. Washington most likely will have a new quarterback, but the Cowboys will need to win this game because the next week the improving Detroit Lions come to Cowboys Stadium. Matthew Stafford, the Highland Park native, hasn't played a NFL game in Cowboys Stadium, so he'll be a little excited about the game. Dallas needs to win these two home games before going into the bye week. ... A two-game homestand, vs. Seattle and Buffalo should give the Cowboys a lift going into a road game at Washington on Nov. 20.

Division games: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wanted the latter part of the schedules to mean something and that's why he's asked the schedule makers to make division games happen in November and December. The Cowboys play four division games the last two months of the season and take on the Giants twice in the last four weeks of the season. Dallas plays three division games the last four weeks. ... The Cowboys went 3-3 in the division last year, pretty good considering how the overall season went. It might have been better if not for that season opening loss at Washington. ... The Cowboys first division game is at Washington, on ESPN on Sept. 26, which is also the home opener. The Cowboys have a .582 winning percentage all-time within the division.

Jason Garrett games: Jason Garrett makes his debut on Sept. 11 at the New York Jets. Previous Cowboys coaches who won their season debuts were Wade Phillips, Chan Gailey and Barry Switzer. Bill Parcells, Dave Campo, Jimmy Johnson and Tom Landry lost their debuts. ... Garrett faces first-year coach Jim Harbaugh in Week 2 at San Francisco. The Cowboys have won their last two meetings against the 49ers. ... Garrett's biggest test will come late in the season: December. He's got three division games the last four weeks and five NFC games to close the season. If the Cowboys are in the playoff hunt, seedings will be on the line.

Assuming we have a season I'll be there. If you see someone getting the heimlich maneuver in the stands it will be me on the receiving end.

I'm hoping for results more along the lines of the 99' game when Marino threw 5 picks.

Week 5 bye.....wonderfully craptastic. Glancing at the schedule as a whole put me down for 9-7.

I don't have a preference with the bye. Most people think it's best to have it right in the middle of the season, but I think it depends on circumstance. How the injury bug hits you throughout the year.

I do like having two weeks to prepare before the New England game.

Some will say the 1st game with the Jets but to me the Patriots game on the road will be a good measuring stick to see if this team will be for real or not in 2011'.

To me, that Jets game is almost unwinnable. They'll be so stoked for that game with all the 9-11 stuff going on that we're pretty much the sacrificial lamb that night.

If the Cowboys can go into that setting and win that game, I'll be very impressed.

So we open on the f -ucking road AGAIN and now close on the f -ucking road AGAIN. Sons of bitches.

My mistake. The Cowboys close at the Giants, but still, we open and close on the road which is f -ucked up, and in the same stadium.

Tell me about it.

I don't believe that the NFL is out to get us or some other nonsense like that, but it is absolutely ridiculous that we've had only one season opener at home in the last 8 years.

To make it worse, every year we go on the road to face a playoff team from the year before. The one and only time we did face a team that was coming off a losing season was last year, but we still all knew that game would be tough given it was our most hated rival with a new coach and new QB.

Is it really too much to ask for to get a home game to start the year?

Sheesh.
