We're 1/4 through our season. 2-2 isnt awful, although I think they blew a golden opportunity by not closing out the Lions in week 4. Thats one of those games that could come back to bite us in the ass if we're battling for a playoff spot at seasons end.
Offensive MVP- I really had a hard time with this one. Romo has had some moments of absolute brilliance, but has followed that up with about 3 quarters of the most dreadful football a QB can play (4th qtr vs the Jets, most of the 2nd half vs the Lions). Miles Austin was off to an amazing start in the first two weeks, then got injured. Witten has been his usual amaizng self. But I am going with the rookie kicker, Dan Bailey. We've won two games, and he basically is the reason why in both. Making game tying and GW fg's vs SF, then making 6 vs Washington, including the GW. He's only missed one (the easiest one as it turned out) and has made 11 staright and 12/13 overall. Even better, I think everyone of them have basically been drilled right down the middle. Looks like we may have our kicker for years to come.
Defensive MVP- Ware has been pretty dominant, and Sean Lee has been amazing as well. He's all over vs the run and the pass. He's played physical vs the run. I'll go with co-MVP's here in Ware and Lee.
Most Improved Offensive Player- He wasnt here last yr, but we're seeing tremendous week to week growth in Tyron Smith. In April I think alot of people hoped we'd found a gem down the road in Smith, but his play is getting to the level that makes me think not only will he be a future probowler for years to come, he might even make the trip as a rookie.
Biggest Disappointment, Offense- There were a couple of candidates, but Romo's meltdown vs the Lions sealed this for him IMO. Just no excuse for his play in the 2nd half of that game, or the two awful decisions vs the Jets in week one. I thought he had grown out of those types of plays, obviously I was wrong. Everybody criticized Bennett for making the comment about allowing Kitna to challenge for the starting job, but maybe he wasnt as off as we thought. (Me included). When everything is taken into consideration, Kitna played better the 2nd half of last yr with less around him, than Romo has so far this yr. He needs to step up and eliminate the stupid, rookie type mistakes that cost us two games already.
Most Improved, Defense- Sean Lee, without question. Most improved player on the team I think. Jenkins gets a runner up nod, he seems to have returned to 2009 form, and he hasnt been anywhere near 100% yet.
Biggest Disappointment, Defense- Hard to single out one guy for disappointing play, but the two that stand out IMO are Victor Butler and Bryan McCann (now gone, because he sucked). I really thought Butler would be making more plays than he has, but other than 1 or 2 plays he's been basically invisible and doesnt appear to have any chance of ever being the guy opposite Ware. McCann was dreadful, and deserved to be cut.
I think we're going in the right direction, still alot of work that needs to be done. They need to run the ball better. They need the pass rush to be more consistent. They need to force more turnovers. But they are making progress I think, and this team is alot younger than the team we ended last season with. I thought all offseason we wouldnt see the best of this team until probably mid to late November, and I'm sticking by that belief. I just hope we can hang in there for the next few weeks so that we're playing meaningful games in December and January.
