'07 Cowboys No. 3 on disappointing list

IRVING, Texas -- The fine folks at Football Outsiders have put together its top-10 most disappointing playoff teams of the past 25 years and the 2007 Cowboys come in at No. 3.

The Cowboys finished 13-3 and had homefield advantage in the NFC only to lose, 21-17, to the New York Giants at Texas Stadium in the divisional round.

Here’s what the author Mike Tanier wrote about the team:

We all saw this one coming. The Cowboys raced out to a 12-1 record in 2007, then declared "mission accomplished" and sleepwalked through a few ugly late-season losses. Tony Romo and some teammates then spent their playoff bye weekend in Cabo, Mexico, just in case you weren't 100 percent certain that they thought they already won the Super Bowl. The Cowboys actually held 14-7 and 17-14 leads in the playoff game, but after Brandon Jacobs scored a 1-yard touchdown near the start of the fourth quarter, the Cowboys' offense collapsed in a heap of ugly sacks and sloppy penalties. Lesson learned: Cabo is a great place for players to visit in early February, not early January.

Cabo is a way too convenient reason for the loss. It had nothing to do with the result. The Giants’ pass rush overwhelmed the Cowboys, just as it overwhelmed New England in the Super Bowl. (As an aside, you would think an undefeated Patriots team losing in the Super Bowl to the Giants would be in the top 10, but it is not.)

And if Patrick Crayton catches that Romo flip on third-and-13 from the Dallas 17 with so much open room in front of him, the Cowboys likely win the game and never make this list.

Looking back at that season, I believe a lot of the players believe that is the one that got away. Everything was set up for them to make a Super Bowl run, but they relaxed. They came into 2008 feeling entitled and ended up missing the playoffs. Ever since the '07 season they have been chasing that chance and you have to wonder if it will be so close again.

By the way, former head coach Wade Phillips’ prints are all over this list. The 2006 San Diego Chargers, who finished 14-2, check in at No. 10, and he was the defensive coordinator. Philadelphia from 1988-90 takes up the No. 7 spot and he was the Eagles coordinator in 1988. At No. 5 are the ’02 Green Bay Packers, who lost to Atlanta at Lambeau Field. Phillips was the Falcons' coordinator that year.

I mostly blame Wade Phillips for being too soft with his players.

I truly believe if Jason coached that team we could of made it further in the playoffs.

Jason knows how to prepare his team, and Wade was horrible at it. That's why he failed as a head coach in this league.

If Crayton catches that ball, then we win the game. But yeah, what a complete flop. That was a horrible way to end that season.

I can't even take solace in losing to the eventual SB winner. We were the better team. Just not that day.

I will never forget driving home from the game completely devastated and on the shoulder of 183 west behind me comes the giants two busses with police escorts on there way to the airport. We could see the players in the bus moving around through the windows.....its a sickening feeling I will never forget. Not as bad as leaving for the final time ever from the stadium after losing to the ravens, but close.

But that is what being a fan is, going all in and if doesnt work out you take your lumps and go all in the next year.

by the way, I think the 1989 giants should be higher on that list. That was a good team that was dominating the rams in that playoff game, they rushed for over 100 yards in the first half. Phil Simms threw one of the worst passes in post season history right before the half that swung the game the other way. Most people dont remember it though. The giants niners game that happened in the 90 nfc championship game might have happened in 89 had they won the game. Oh well.

I was at that game. Flipper Anderson caught a touchdown just a few plays into overtime. The life was sucked out of the Meadowlands that day.

Yep that was the one. Simms missed two touchdowns to open wr in the first half and instead of being up 14-0 it was 6-0. Then right before the half on there own 30 yard line with about 40 seconds left the giants got a first down and called timeout. They were dominating on both sides. they had run for 100 yards and forced two turnovers. It was domination. Then for some reason on their own 30 yard line instead of taking a knee or running the ball and going to the half they decided to spread it out and throw it. Simms threw right into what looked like a cover 4 with the lb sitting in zone also. Of course it was picked and everett threw a td right before the half and changed the whole game.

in the final minutes simms completed a 3rd and 18 to lionel manuel for a 1st down at midfield, then the drive stalled...rams got the ball in overtime, got a a terrible pass interference on a third down and then everett to anderson to end it. I think that game is what drove them to the championship in 90. I think they felt they missed their opportunity to knock off the niners and were determined to do it in 90.

I have no idea why I like that game so much. I guess watching it around giants fans as a kid always made me remember it.

Where is the complete list? Is the 2008 Giants included, having won the Super Bowl the prior year, winning the division, then losing to a divisional opponent (Eagles) in the same fashion the Cowboys did the year prior?

They should be. the 08 giants are a carbon copy of the 07 cowboys.
