Yeah, I understand that. But did you listen to the commentators last night, specifically Gruden? They didn't have a dog in the fight. But they pointed out the bad officiating directed towards the Cowboys.

Nope, ended up being able to watch the game, but i listened to Sham & Babe.

Detroit's got a lot of good players on offense. Calvin Johnson can't be stopped right now, your best hope is to minimize the damage he does. But then there's Best out of the backfield, Brandon Pettigrew was on fire against the Vikings, Burleson's had a couple of good games...
Everybody's going to have to be ready to cover, linebackers included. If they aren't, we'll have matchup problems all day long.

Lions' offense is potent, but not without flaws

By Carlos Mendez

cmendez@star-telegram.com

The Detroit Lions are taking a closer look at their offensive line after giving up five sacks last week against Minnesota.

They were the first sacks allowed this season by the Lions, and they rushed for only 20 yards.

Right tackle Gosder Cherilus, a first-round pick in 2008, was pulled after just two series after being unable to hold back Vikings defensive end Brian Robison.

Left tackle Jeff Backus, one of the Lions' most veteran players, allowed two sacks and committed two false starts in a tough outing against premier pass rusher Jared Allen.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz didn't commit to returning Cherilus to his place at right tackle or keeping backup Corey Hilliard, who had started in Week 2.

"We need to be more effective at that position. I will just leave it at that," Schwartz told Detroit reporters.

Former Cowboys third-round draft pick Stephen Peterman is the starter at right guard. Jason Fox, a second-year player who played at North Crowley High School, is the backup left tackle.

Rush offense

The Lions have an effective offense, but they have one of the NFL's worst rushing attacks.

Leading rusher Jahvid Best averages 2.9 yards per carry. Last week, he carried 12 times for 14 yards.

Like the Cowboys, they don't have many explosive runs -- only one run of 20 or more yards. The Cowboys got their first two 20-plus-yard runs Monday night.

"It's not all on the running backs," Jim Schwartz said.

"We had poor blocking at the point of attack on a couple. On a couple, we blocked poorly on the back side, and a couple were poorly blocked on the perimeter. We can get better in every facet."

The Lions' average of 78.3 rushing yards per game ranks 26th in the league. But their offense is still in the top 10 for yards per game (400.0) and in the top five in points per game (33.7).

Lions injuries

Nickel cornerback Aaron Berry left the game last week with a groin injury.

Backup linebacker Isaiah Ekejiuba suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter.

Jim Schwartz wasn't optimistic.

"He didn't finish the game. He could be out a while," he said.

Little-used receiver Rashied Davis has a hamstring injury.

First-round pick Nick Fairley is questionable for this week's game.

The defensive tackle suffered a fracture in his left foot in training camp Aug. 1.

Briefly

Calvin Johnson has six touchdown catches through three games. That's halfway to his career high of 12.

Kyle Vanden Bosch leads the Lions in sacks with three. The team had four last week and has eight for the season.

Jason Hanson is 8 for 8 on field goals, with a long of 51. He made four kicks last week.

The Lions allowed a kickoff return of 68 yards and a punt return of 53 yards last week.

'Slim' chance that Nick Fairley plays Sunday for Lions

Lions coach Jim Schwartz wouldn't commit to a return date for rookie Nick Fairley in his weekly radio appearance Tuesday, but a person familiar with the defensive tackle's recovery from foot surgery said chances were "slim" he would play Sunday against the Cowboys.

"He's working hard to get back on the field, and I think that he's going to play a lot of football for us this year. And when he gets back he'll be ready," Schwartz said on WXYT-FM (97.1). "And when he'll be ready, he'll be back. I think I'll just leave it there."

ESPN reported during its "Monday Night Football" broadcast that the Lions "are hopeful" Fairley will return from his fractured foot in a limited pass-rushing role Sunday.

Though that remains the case, Fairley still has "a ways to go" before he's ready to contribute, the person familiar with the recovery said.

The 13th overall pick in April's draft, Fairley practiced Friday for the first time since Aug. 1, but did not take part in any team drills. He has been slow to recover from foot surgery, and the Lions have been cautious with his return because of solid depth on their defensive line and Fairley's long-term future in the middle of their front.

"He's making progress, he's improving, and we're not going to put him on the field before he's ready," Schwartz said

BRIEFLY: The Lions signed cornerback Anthony Madison and placed coverage specialist Isaiah Ekejiuba on injured reserve Tuesday, according to reports. Madison was with the Lions in training camp but was cut before the start of the season. The Lions also signed receiver Owen Spencer to the practice squad, according to FoxSports.com.

I imagine it'll be a shoot out. I don't think we can stop them, and I don't think they'll be able to stop us.

This is assuming Dez and Miles both play.

I dont think there's much chance Austin plays, and Dez clearly wont be anywhere near 100%. They were saying he was probably 70-75% at best Monday night.

The Vikings pretty much stopped them for all of the first half. Until they faced the Vikings, they had experienced a team with a decent pass rush, and when they did, look what happened. The Vikings should have won that game.

From the other side: Carlos Monarrez
September, 28, 2011 Sep 2812:03PM CTEmail Print Comments1 By Calvin WatkinsWell we got the Detroit Lions in town for the Week 4 contest and in our weekly look at the opponent we speak with Carlos Monarrez, who covers the Lions for the Detroit Free Press. Check him out at freep.com.

Q: Just how big of a game is this for the Lions?

A: It’s huge. This will be their toughest test yet and they’ll get a massive amount of national attention for this game. They’ve won 11 straight games (including the preseason) and haven’t tasted defeat since Dec. 5. They definitely don’t want to end that streak and lose momentum heading into their Monday night game next week against Chicago, their most hated rival.

Q: Cowboys secondary hasn't been tested deep, do you think the Lions will go deep on Sunday?

A: Count on it. Matthew Stafford takes several deep shots at Calvin Johnson every game. Y’all remember Alvin Harper? Well, Johnson is 6-feet-5 and may be as good as Harper was at out jumping defensive backs for the ball. His two biggest catches at Minnesota last week came on deep passes on which he out jumped 6-2 Chris Cook and 6-foot Cedric Griffin. Tight end Brandon Pettigrew can be dangerous in the seam and speedy rookie receiver Titus Young gets down field fast and has gold-plated hands covered in glue.

Q: Lions front seven is good. But what about the secondary?

A: It’s much improved. A lot of that is because the defensive backs don’t have to cover as long with the Lions’ great four-man rush. But the DBs play their man-cover scheme pretty well. Cornerback Chris Houston plays on the left side, he has two picks and he’s underrated. Second-year safety Amari Spievey took some bad angles last week, but he’s been dependable. Safety Louis Delmas is nursing a hip injury; he has great instincts and he’s a big hitter, though a bit of a gambler.

Q: Matthew Stafford is coming back to Dallas. How important is this game for him, especially after being unable to play against the Cowboys last year?

A: Stafford displays very little emotion to reporters, so it’s hard to judge what this game means to him. I expect he’ll play it cool this week, but if he’s human it has to mean something to return to home and play well in front of what’s sure to be a strong contingent of friends and family. Stafford is only 23, but he’s extremely professional and mature for his age, so he won’t try to do anything extra that isn’t part of the game plan.

Q: How difficult will Calvin Johnson be to cover?

A: It’s nearly impossible in single coverage. Johnson eats up shorter DBs like Dallas’ 5-10 guys, Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins. They’ll need lots of help. But Johnson is simply too fast, too big at 236 pounds and too strong to shut down all day. He and Stafford have worked with the precision of a Swiss watch this season, but for the sake of beating that metaphor to death, they’ve also required a little early winding and haven’t done much damage at the beginning of games.

You know... I just now realized this, but this could be a huge game if we have any hopes of getting into the playoffs.

I don't think we win the division. And I don't think the Lions win theirs.

But both teams could potentially be in the mix for a wild card spot.

Head to head victory is a tie breaker, but I'm not sure where it lies when you list all tie breakers.

The NFC west is Going to fuck over a good wc team but i'm not worried about the giants or skins long term. I think we need the bucs and falcons to stay at or below 9 wins.

Costa > suh

even scarier, suh vs nagy.

cliff avril looked good in the game against minnesota. They are going to be a serious challenge. They were showing that same 7 and 8 men at the line blitz against minnesota as washington did against us..

wish we had scandrick and austin. We miss austin a ton.

Screw it... I'm just going to make this the game day thread.

This weekend sucks.

Detroit Lions (3-0) @ Dallas Bryants (2-1)
San Francisco 49ers (2-1) @ Philadelphia Eagles (1-2)
Washington Redskins (2-1) @ St. Louis Rams (0-3)
New York Giants (2-1) @ Arizona Cardinals (1-2)

SNF & MNF are terrible.

Once Peyton Manning was out, the NFL should've done everything in their power to get the Colts out of those prime time slots.

I actually like the Rams to beat the Skins.

And yes, Colts should not be on SNF or MNF, or hell, even a 3 o'clock game..
